Biosecurity: Secure Pork Supply Plan
Protecting Herds. Maintaining Business Continuity.
While traceability focuses on tracking where animals move, biosecurity ensures they stay healthy where they are. The Secure Pork Supply (SPS) Plan provides a voluntary, science-based framework to help pork producers prepare before a foreign animal disease (FAD) outbreak occurs.
Developed in partnership with federal and state animal health officials, universities, and industry experts, the SPS Plan outlines practical steps that support both animal health and business continuity during an outbreak.
Purpose of the Secure Pork Supply Plan
The SPS Plan is designed to:
Protect farms through enhanced biosecurity practices.
Support business continuity by preparing for permitted animal movement when herds remain disease-free.
Strengthen coordination and communication between producers and animal health officials.
By implementing these measures before a crisis, producers reduce risk, protect their operations, and contribute to the stability of the entire pork supply chain.
Key Components of the SPS Plan
Written Enhanced Biosecurity Plan: Develop a site-specific biosecurity plan tailored to your operation.
Designated Biosecurity Manager: Identify and train a responsible individual to oversee all biosecurity measures.
Perimeter Buffer Area (PBA) & Line of Separation (LOS): Establish physical and operational barriers to prevent disease introduction.
Annual Employee Training: Educate all personnel on disease awareness, prevention, and emergency response.
Accurate Recordkeeping: Maintain up-to-date records of animal movements, visitors, and deliveries.
These components form the foundation for a robust prevention and response system—protecting herds, livelihoods, and market access.
Working Hand-in-Hand with Traceability
The Secure Pork Supply Plan complements traceability tools like AgView, ensuring the industry is both prepared and connected. Together, biosecurity and traceability create a comprehensive defense against disease, enabling a faster and more effective response during an outbreak.
The Secure Pork Supply Plan helps us be proactive rather than reactive. It gives us a clear roadmap to keep animals safe and farms operational.
Learn More and Get Started
Team Pork encourages every producer—commercial, show pig, and niche—to implement the Secure Pork Supply Plan as part of their everyday management. By building a culture of biosecurity, we strengthen our farms, our state, and our industry as a whole.
